biography
Kenan Stevick brings 44 years of chemical industry experience to every engagement — including 34 years at Dow Chemical, where he served as Chief Process Safety Engineer and Global Director of Process Safety, leading a team of 70 professionals responsible for the global application of process safety technology, management systems, and hazard and risk assessment tools.
During his tenure at Dow, Kenan led the Corporate Process Safety Tier 1 & 2 Incident Reduction initiative, achieving a cumulative 90% reduction in Tier 1 incidents over ten years across two successive leadership roles — including a 75% reduction in Tier 1 and Tier 2 incidents during his first four years as Chief Process Safety Engineer — results that remain industry-leading benchmarks to this day. He defined and implemented corporate-wide Tier 3 & 4 Metrics as leading indicators, and held coordination and oversight responsibility for legal compliance and risk reduction capital programs across the enterprise.
Critically, 21 of those 44 years were spent in direct operational roles — including Plant Manager, Production Leader, and Site Director Roles — running the chemical facilities where process safety performance is won or lost at the front line. That hands-on operational foundation is what distinguishes Kenan’s assessments from those of purely academic or staff-function consultants.
As co-author of two landmark CCPS publications — Process Safety: Leadership from the Boardroom to the Front Line (Wiley/CCPS, 2019) and Guidelines for Process Safety in Outsourced Manufacturing, 2nd Edition (CCPS, 2026) — Kenan has helped define the standard of care against which corporate process safety governance is now measured in both operational and legal contexts.
Kenan has been retained as testifying expert in five process safety cases involving refinery and chemical manufacturing facility fires, explosions, chemical exposures. fatalities, and property loss, with two depositions completed. His analytical framework applies CCPS Risk Based Process Safety methodology to organizational and management system failures that create conditions for catastrophic incidents.
Kenan co-developed and delivers the CCPS executive leadership workshop on process safety governance, based on the book he co-authored. He has conducted 20 workshops for executive leadership teams including CEOs. The workshop has been adopted by the American Chemistry Council as a standard intervention for member companies, and participating organizations have demonstrated measurable improvement in process safety performance.
He has also conducted board-commissioned Process Safety Management System assessments for major chemical companies, using the CCPS Risk Based Process Safety framework informed by his 44 years of operational experience across multiple U.S. sites and corporate headquarters. One client achieved a 50% reduction in Tier 1 & 2 incidents within three years of implementing the assessment recommendations.
He also practices independently through KPS Inc., delivering all work personally to boards, legal teams, and global operations that cannot afford to get process safety wrong.
Why I Do This Work
Process safety is not a compliance exercise. It is not a cost center. It is not a box to check before the auditors arrive. Every system failure, every incident, every near-miss represents a gap between what leadership understood about their risk and what was actually present in their operations. I have spent 44 years closing that gap — at Dow, with clients around the world, and through the CCPS publications that now define the standard of care. The cost of getting this wrong is not measured in dollars. It is measured in lives. That is why I do this work.
